Linha da Serra Project

Research I've done in Brazil, Guaramiranga (CE) - extremely rural area were there is a lot of illiteracy. Focusing on the physical environment of our public schools.

Thanks!

Obrigada

Funciona! E é fácil! It works, and if I can do it I am sure so can the kids!

The budget is ready, folder is done, land is bought - donations lacking! But things are walking and people are smiling!

unicef:

Two years after the quake
Haiti and its approximately 4.3 million children continue to recover from the 2010 earthquake that killed some 220,000 people and displaced more than 1.6 million. Advances in education have been substantial, with over 1,200 schools repaired or constructed. Still, half of eligible children do not attend primary school.

Here…children attend class at St. Gérard School, rebuilt with UNICEF support, in Port-au-Prince.

O PROJETO

THE PROJECT

We have as an eco-school project, aiming to build it using environmentally friendly techniques, recycled materials such as furniture made out of pallets and the structure out of recycled plastic moulds, creating a space for culture and leisure in Guaramiranga, Ceará, Brazil. As a way of offering children and adolescents new learning opportunities such as theater workshops, nutrition and environment.

We want to divert the street (and TODAY we will know how many square meters the lady that owns the land in front of the school is willing to donate!), to create a recreational space and green area of environmental education with vertical gardens. The wall built around this new area is going to be made out of mud, mortar and donated glass bottles, hoping to bring the community, students and volunteers together to build a new school.

Already got a room built with the recycled plastic moulds, donated by a very warm hearted man!!!

Things are starting to fall apart! Let’s start soon…

“The child starting kindergarden this year will graduate in the third decade of the 21st century. All we can know about the world she will step into is that it will have challenges and opportunities beyond what we can imagine today, problems and possibilities that will demand creativity and ingenuity, responsibility and compassion. Whether this year’s kindergarden students will merely survive or positively thrive in the decades to come depends in large measure on the experiences she has in school. Those experiences will be shaped by adults, by peers, and ultimately by the places, by the physical environments where she does her learning.” - David W. Orr, professor of environmental studies at Oberlin College and leading authority on ecological design.

The very basic idea, just to show how the recycled plastic house blocks look like, same with the wooden roof tiles, pallet bookshelf and pallet table.

2012!

Let’s start a new project?

We are planning a “Green Classroom” - I’ll keep posting the progress, and if there are any ideas, comments or anything, please don’t hesitate to write!

On this picture I stopped this silly plan to build a tiny room with less than a meter between the room and the rest of the building (completely useless) and a small place on the other side that could not be used for anything.

The big picture is: walls made out of donated recycled plastic (produced here in Ceará/Brazil), the roof build with donated reforestation wood tiles and the inside tables and shelfs build with used recycled pallets and painted by the children with eco earth based paint.

Exciting!

Short virtual tour of the Linha da Serra School!!

Research organisation starting in Brazil, coming with the childrens drawings to the London room wall, going through methodology and theory - and finally the final ‘tipping’ book.

Last interview with Mrs Roza Flor, school director.

(please select “Brazilian Portuguese” on Choose Language for English Subtitles!!)

And the stars grew fast!

Picture taken last Friday by photographer Janus Lonngren - thank you!

Comparing boys and girls on the results of the Likert scale.

Analysing what I have - the difference between the likert scale doing individually and in group is quite big, and boys x girls is quite amazing, boys seem to have so much more opinions, seem more brave to give their true opinion.

The drawings, done on the 11/08, like the school is, and on the 16/08, their dream school. They do not know any school besides their own, but I can see that on the 16th they understood what I was doing there, and seem to want to show what they wish would be different. I gave them a lot of colors, and they wanted to use them all. They used happy colors, some drew the nature outside - but the most impressive are the chairs, they really seem to want better ones, where the table is separate from the chair, and gives them more space to work.

On the 16th, their dream school, most of them gave the school a name (that was before I painted the name)

I was sent this photo today from back home.

On this day we brought some of the school students into the farm, to teach them how earth is formed and gave them all a little seed to take home. Apparently they are all taking very good care of them!!
